Those about to rock, we salute you!Can you name these most influential bands of all time? Rock and roll originated in the 1950s with bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, but it all seemed to sound the same until the mid-1960s when the genre branched off into many different styles. By the end of that one decade, the Beatles and Stones had completely changed their sounds. Guitar-heavy bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and the Who became known for their aggressive onstage presence and outrageous antics. Psychedelic-rock bands like Jefferson Airplane and the Jimi Hendrix Experience referenced illicit substances in their mind-bending tunes that appealed to the counterculture. Later, bands like Fleetwood Mac and Queen owned the 1970s. The rise of punk rock with Blondie and the Ramones in the '70s led to the New Wave style of the 1980s and bands like the Go-Go's, while grunge and the groundbreaking sound of Nirvana followed in the '90s.
Today we have all those decades of great rock 'n' roll music to thank for their influence on the bands of today. The Irish hitmakers U2 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are still going strong. Dave Grohl started the Foo Fighters after Nirvana, and that band has sold millions of records. As the lyric goes, rock and roll is here to stay.
