When you think of "heavy metal," you probably aren't considering the density of plutonium but the kind of hard-edged, headbanging music gifted us to by musicians like Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC and Motley Crue. Heavy metal actually became a "thing" back in the late 1960s, with bands like Deep Purple and Black Sabbath who tried to create the loudest music they could using distortion, guitar solos and lots of drums. Through the 1970s, various bands gave us their take on the genre: Motörhead was faster "speed" metal, while Iron Maiden and Judas Priest put the fear of Satan into all of us. By the 1980s, Los Angeles's Sunset Strip was rife with fans banging their heads to the likes of Poison, Cinderella, Ratt, Van Halen and many others who ushered in a new era of "hair bands" or "glam metal." While heavy metal music took a back seat to New Wave and other genres in the middle of the decade, Axl Rose and GNR 's seminal album Appetite for Destruction made it hugely popular again.
